Probiotics or Anti-Antibiotics

Our friend, a fingernail-sized frog named Floggle

Oh, how we've wanted to write this article. Oh, how we wanted to be right about this! Finally, as we leave Bali, we can safely report: our bellies made it out unscathed!

Just a few quick words about the infamous bellyache they call Bali-Belly. It is similar to Montezuma's Revenge, for all of us who have caravaned down to Tijuana or Rocky Point; basically a parasite from the water or food wriggles into your body and very quickly drives you directly to the bathroom, where you must crown yourself king or queen of the throne for days.

This type of discomfort is an ugly truth that most travellers grin and bear. Not us. We are not interested in statements from guidebooks saying "Bali welcomes every traveller with an initiation, what the locals call "Bali Belly". We are not interested in becoming kings or queens of porcelain thrones! We are not interested in the recommendations to not eat salad, not have ice in our drinks or brush our teeth with bottled water! We want that which should be regular to remain as such.

And so. We have been taking PROBIOTICS! Not antibiotics, no no. PRObiotics. These magic little pearls (Nature's Way: Reuteri Pearls)have been colonizing a perfect society of microscopic Arnold Schwarzeneggers (or McClaines for the Die Hard fans) in our intestines. Every time we eat nasi campur or some other indescribeably delicious meal, it is like the Spartans battling in our colons; and winning.

Our last few days in Bali are now a blur of motorbikes, fresh fish and yoga . . . a mellow and deeply satsifying way to end our stay. Bali has treated like royalty, and perhaps, in another incarnation, we are (or will be . . . or were . . . hmmm, not sure exactly how linear time relates to the Hindu belief in reincarnation, but nonetheless). We have had a charming, mesmerizing time, and we hope to see you, Bali, soon.

Matur suksma!

Love,
Dan&Kim

Okay, so I finally caught up on 6 Danberlies. And OH MY GOSH!!!! Beautiful sites and sounds--and the amazing colors! I bet you are glad to be in a warmer climate. Kimi gets to show some skin! I was even able to watch the cockfight. Horrible! Tying razor blades to their poor little legs. I hope they at least cook up the dead one! I am jealous of the long massages, yoga, healing, meditation, etc...I am on the next flight to Bali, oh but wait...I have to work at 9am tomorrow. yuck! Just be glad you don't! Enjoy yourselves a little more for me. Love and miss you! Monica

Love the pics of dinner on the beach. Mahvelous! Am so glad you posted pics of the outdoors and not of you sitting on the john, then turing the camera to show the interior of the stalls walls (tourists perspective.)

OMG, I am so totally going to make a trip to Bali!!! Kimi, I think you have become a world food editor. Thank you for deliciously describing the wonderful array of cuisine during your travels. I am salivating at every new dish that appears in your journal. I can't wait to taste Thailand. And, I am ready for a massage. Must go to Bali. Bobo is a torti cat (tortoise shell) like I had named Crisco!! You both look fit, healthy and extremely and exuberantly happy. Again, thank you so much for sharing with us through. Looking forward to more adventures. Love to you both. Auntie W.
