Giving Thanks

Dan Digs In.

Thanksgiving at the Danberly House was just lovely. Our local friends were flying to all ends of the country to be with their respective families, leaving the two of us to celebrate Thanksgiving on our own. Not to be deterred by the lack of extra bellies, Kim forged on, cooking all of our Thanksgiving favorites. The cast included a 10-pound turkey, stuffing (with sausage!), mashed potatoes, gravy, green bean casserole, candied yams (with marshmallows!), homemade rolls, cranberry sauce, and a pecan pie and a pumpkin pie. Whoahhhh... we're still rubbing our swollen bellies, confounded by what seems like an extra 15 pounds we each put on. There must have been about 2 pounds of butter that went into the meal (actually we're not joking... we did purchase two boxes of butter which seem to have mysteriously disappeared).

The Turkey Gives Birth to a Bag of Stuffing

As much as we love having a houseful of guests to share Thanksgiving with, we must admit that it was quite peaceful to not have to worry about when things would be done, and how everything would turn out. We snacked all day as the meal came along. We had pumpkin pie for breakfast as it was first out of the oven. Then we kept sneaking back to the kitchen to grab little bites of stuffing because it was SO DANG GOOD! Kim uses her stepdad Jerry's famous stuffing recipe, which is the best stuffing in the world. We were dog-sitting Moxie, a cute little Westie dog who belongs to Dan's second cousin Rozzy. Dan and Moxie cuddled up and took naps on the couch while Kim cooked. We went for a nice long walk since it was a surprisingly beautiful and warm day in Boulder. We walked all the way to the liquor store to get some Thanksgiving wine, and settled on Kung Fu Girl Riesling because the sign said "Great with Turkey!", and also because the illustration of the girl on the bottle looked like Kim. It was delicious, by the way.

The turkey came out of the oven at 5:00, and we proceeded to pour gravy over everything and stuff ourselves silly. The rest of the evening was spent lying on the couch in a food-induced coma watching a movie of some sort. Kim occasionally snuck back to the table for seconds, then thirds, then pie, then fourths. It was glorious! And yet... as we grudgingly took on the task of cleaning up and putting food into containers, we realized that we hadn't made a dent in our feast. Thus followed many meals of leftovers. Breakfast, lunch and dinner consisted of a mosaic of little piles of food artfully arranged on a mini baking sheet, and warmed until sizzling in our toaster oven.

Luckily for us, on the third day we went for a hike with our friends Tait and Eden, and we all came back to our house ravenous, devouring most of the remaining leftovers. This time however, we made a mosaic of medium-sized piles of food artfully arranged in a big Pyrex dish, and cooked it in the big oven. This was followed by several hours of drinking, and eating pie, and making Rice Krispy Treats (but with crispy brown rice cereal, and extra butter, and sea salt!) and playing games including Cranium, Five Crowns, Backgammon, and our new favorite, Bananagrams.

Dan has since gone on a health kick. This includes doing a cleanse, eating healthy, meditating, jogging and going to Yoga. Kim has been supporting him in his endeavor by dutifully eating the very last bits of leftovers and pie, and any other rich foods in the house so that he won't be tempted by them. Take note, ladies... this is what loving girlfriends do for their man.

We are so thankful to have such wonderful friends and family. Thank you all so much for the joy and laughs that you bring to our lives! We are also grateful to live in such a beautiful place, and be blessed with an abundance of yummy food, and sunshine and good times!

Love,
Kim and Dan
